Bukima was a Solitary Silverback in the Gorilla Sector for much of his life. It was some time after the massacre of the Rugendo Family, and the Silverback Senkwekwe, that Bukima and Pili-Pili took over the rest of the family.

In 2008 and part of 2009 both Bukima and Pili-Pili led the Rugendo Family. But in 2009 Pili-Pili left, with the juvenile Bavukahe.

Bukima has always been a great practitioner of the Rugendo Family tradition: leaving the park to eat corn and other produce growing in the farmers’ fields.
